Bernd Rest.
Translates texts from German into English, and vice versa. Fast and meticulous.
I was born in Salzburg, Austria, and have lived in England since 1991, where I obtained my undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Contemporary Music (CLCM) and Composition (King's College, London), and the Diploma in Translation (Chartered Institute of Linguists, London).
I have many years' experience translating texts both from English into German and German into English, on subjects as diverse as architecture, refugees and asylum, human rights, manufacture, television and film, subtitling, funding applications, music, travel, current affairs and prose. My clients are located in the UK, Germany and Austria, and I am pleased to have been working with some of them for many years.
I have strong and ongoing professional, social and linguistic ties to both the German-speaking and the English-speaking world, which not only enable me to render texts correctly on a grammatical and idiomatic level, but to select an appropriate register from the wide spectrum of available variations. It is crucially important that translations appear to have been composed in the target language, and that the source language is not inadvertently revealed by inappropriate choices of tone, style or register.
Together with my colleague Rose Brown, who holds undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in English and Media Studies (University of Sussex) and worked as a subeditor and writer for The Sunday Times Magazine for twelve years, I ensure that all texts are flawless, formatted and presented perfectly and ready to go to print / online. We can also shorten and condense your texts and create snappy headlines, captions and slogans for your publications.

"In my opinion, Bernd is an exceptionally conscientious
and competent translator. Any author would be lucky to have their work translated by him."
Martin Amanshauser, author
"Bernd reads text sent to him for translation very thoroughly and always asks
the right questions when the content is not entirely clear. I think that's great.
The translations are done promptly, and working with him is straightforward.
In a word, perfect.
